SituPlaylist: The Summer Preface

“Right on time, back by the beach…still gon’ bring the heat”

A Glass Duffle favorite– Jungle— preface their track “Heat” with those ambiguous but encapsulating words. Nevertheless, they coincide nicely with the goal of this SituPlaylist: The Summer Preface.

Summer is nice. Summer is positive. Summer What do we have to look forward to this summer? Besides music festivals, World Cup 2014 (!!!!), summer work hours, and the all around breeziness of it all– the vibe…

Speaking of the breezy vibe, it’s the main topic of this post. As a preamble to Earth’s most glorious season (subjectively), I put together a list of tracks that I think correspond with the jovial bliss that crescendos around this time after a long, dreary winter– right, my Midwest friends? I envision you all nodding your head vehemently right now whilst simultaneously rolling your eyes; that shit sucked.

The Summer Preface consists of myriad genres, tracks, and artists, all of which I tried to pull from 2014 relevancy. The majority of the tracks will be released within the past year or so to lay out a fresh slate for summer, but a few personal nostalgia’s from sunshine’s past slithered their way right in too. Included on this edition: nu disco (Viceroy, Todd Terje, Holy Ghost!), tropical pop (Beat Connection, Strange Talk), catchy new wave (Future Islands, Twin Shadow), synthpop (MS MR, ODESZA), surf rock (Mac DeMarco), space rock (The War on Drugs), and some funky grooves (Kartell). Proudly, the Americana sounds of a talented close friend’s band (Redleg Husky) is featured too! And apologies to all artists not mentioned. Basically, if I could foresee myself awkwardly bee-bopping around with shades on in a grassy vicinity to the beat…welp, you made it.

I’ll conclude with a humbling anecdote: When I was in high school, I used to drive my parents’ golden Chrysler Seabring convertible. That was my cool whip. Accompanying me were two high school gal pals, whom invited me to drop-the-top every time 50 degrees Fahrenheit and over was palpable. This obviously fed mad machoism into yours truly, you know, cuz you’re already confident in everything you do that age anyway.

I can kid now, but looking back, I would very much fancy a long drive and the GoPro in that car whilst these tunes ride out in the background– past, present or future. I hope you can say the same.

Like to add something that fits in nicely into the Spotify rectangle above? Feel free to drop a line!
